The god sits on a throne, made of gold and ivory, and a crown is placed upon his head, imitating olive branches.
In his right hand he carries a Victory, she too made of ivory and gold, holding a fillet and having a crown upon her head; and in the left hand of the god is a scepter, inlaid with every kind of metal, and the bird sitting upon the scepter is the eagle.
The sandals of the god are of gold, and his robe likewise; and upon the robe are fashioned figures of animals and lilies among the flowers.
The throne is adorned with gold and precious stones, and is also adorned with ebony and ivory; and upon it are figures represented by painting and statues wrought.
Four Victories, presenting the attitude of dancing women, are at each foot of the throne, and there are two others at the base of each foot.
Upon each of the front feet are placed Theban children snatched by sphinxes, and under the sphinxes Apollo and Artemis are shooting down the children of Niobe.
Between the feet of the throne are four bars, each extending from one foot to another.
On the bar which is directly opposite the entrance, there are seven statues upon it, for as to the eighth of them, they do not know in what manner it disappeared; these would be representations of ancient contests, for the contests for boys had not yet been established in the time of Phidias.
They say that the boy binding his own head with a fillet resembles Pantarces in appearance, and that Pantarces, an Elean youth, was the favorite of Phidias; Pantarces also won a victory in wrestling among the boys in the eighty-sixth Olympiad.
On the remaining bars is the band fighting with Heracles against the Amazons; the number of both sides together is twenty-nine, and Theseus also is ranged among the allies of Heracles.
The feet alone do not support the throne, but also columns, equal to the feet, standing between the feet.
It is not possible to go under the throne, just as at Amyclae we pass into the interior of the throne; but in Olympia there are barriers made in the manner of walls that shut us out.
Of these barriers, as much as is directly opposite the doors is painted only with blue, but the remaining parts of them display the paintings of Panaenus.
Among them is Atlas supporting heaven and earth, and Heracles also stands by, wishing to receive the burden from Atlas, and further Theseus and Pirithous, and Hellas, and Salamis holding in her hand the ornament made on the extremities of ships, and of the labors of Heracles, the deed against the lion in Nemea, and the outrage of Ajax against Cassandra.
