In the middle of the marketplace is a bronze Athena; on its pedestal are statues of the Muses carved in relief.
Above the marketplace is a temple of Octavia, the sister of Augustus, who ruled the Romans after Caesar, the founder of the present Corinth.
For those leaving the marketplace on the road to Lechaeum, there is a propylaea, and upon it are gilded chariots, one carrying Phaethon, the son of Helios, and the other carrying Helios himself.
A little beyond the propylaea, as you enter, on the right is a bronze Heracles.
After it is the entrance to the water of Peirene.
Concerning this, they say that Peirene became a spring from a human being through her tears, as she lamented her son Cenchrias, who had died by the hand of an unwilling Artemis.
The spring is adorned with white stone, and chambers have been made in the manner of caves, from which the water flows into an outdoor basin; it is sweet to drink, and they say that the Corinthian bronze, when red-hot, is tempered by this water, since the Corinthians have no copper of their own.
Furthermore, by Peirene there is a statue of Apollo and an enclosure, in which is a painting representing the daring deed of Odysseus against the suitors.
Going again along the straight road to Lechaeum, there is a seated bronze Hermes, and a ram stands beside him, because Hermes is thought of all gods most to watch over and increase flocks, just as Homer also wrote in the Iliad: "the son of Phorbas, rich in flocks, whom Hermeias loved most of the Trojans and granted him wealth.
"
"The story told about Hermes and the ram in the initiation of the Mother, though I know it, I do not tell.
After the statue of Hermes are Poseidon, Leucothea, and Palaemon upon a dolphin.
There are also many other baths for the Corinthians in various places, some built at public expense, and another which the Emperor Hadrian constructed; the most famous of them is near the Poseidon.
This was made by Eurycles, a Spartan, who adorned it with various stones, including that which they quarry at Croceae in the Laconian territory.
On the left of the entrance stands Poseidon, and after him Artemis hunting.
Many fountains have been constructed throughout the whole city, since water flows for them in abundance, including that which the Emperor Hadrian brought from Stymphalus; but the most worthy of a visit is the one by the statue of Artemis, upon which is Bellerophon, and the water flows through the hoof of the horse Pegasus.
