And this disaster of theirs produced such a great panic among the Phocians in the camp that they gathered into the same place their wives, children, and whatever of their possessions they could carry or drive, and furthermore, clothing, gold, silver, and the images of the gods, and built a pyre as large as possible, leaving thirty men in number over them.
And it had been commanded to these men that, if it should happen that the Phocians were defeated in the battle, they should then first slaughter the wives and children, lay them and the property upon the pyre like sacrificial victims, and having set fire to it, then destroy themselves also, either by one another's hands or by throwing themselves upon the cavalry of the Thessalians.
On account of this, every unsparing resolution is called 'Phocian despair' by the Greeks; but at that time, the Phocians immediately made a sally against the Thessalians.
Their generals were Rhoeus of Ambryssus and Daiphantus of Hyampolis, the latter indeed in command of the cavalry, and the Ambryssian of the infantry force.
But the one who held the highest post among the leaders was Tellias, the Elean seer, and upon Tellias rested the hopes of the Phocians for salvation.
And when they came to close quarters, there arose before the eyes of the Phocians the resolution they had taken regarding their wives and children, and seeing their salvation tossing in insecurity, for the sake of these they rushed into all kinds of daring deeds; and with the goodwill of the gods added besides, they won the most illustrious victory of that time.
And the oracle that had been given to the Phocians by Apollo became known to all the Greeks; for the watchword given by the generals in the battles was, on the side of the Thessalians, Itonian Athena, and on the side of the Phocians, their eponym Phocus.
Because of this achievement, the Phocians sent offerings to Delphi: statues of Apollo, of Tellias the seer of that time, and of all the others who had commanded them in the fight, and along with them, local heroes; and these images are the works of Aristomedon of Argos.
And later there was found by the Phocians a device not inferior in cleverness to the former.
For when the camps were facing each other near the pass into Phocis, five hundred chosen Phocians, waiting for the full circle of the moon, attacked the Thessalians by night, having smeared themselves with gypsum and put on white armor over the gypsum.
Thereupon a very great slaughter of the Thessalians is said to have been wrought, as they regarded what was happening in the night as something more divine than an inroad of enemies.
And it was the Elean Tellias who devised this also for the Phocians against the Thessalians.
