Spiritual Blessings in Christ and His Supremacy

Passage 1 of 6 · Greek

Summary

Paul greets the saints in Ephesus, praising the spiritual blessings and eternal election granted by God through Christ. He expresses gratitude for their faith and prays that they may comprehend the hope of their calling and the immense power of God, which was manifested in raising Christ and establishing Him as the head over all things for the church.

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are [in Ephesus] and faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him in love, having predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, with which he favored us in the Beloved, In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight, making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him, for an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens and the things on the earth—in him, in whom also we were made an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be to the praise of his glory.
In whom you also, having heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation—in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which is the guarantee of our inheritance, toward the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of his glory.
For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your heart enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what are the riches of the glory of his "inheritance" "among the saints," and what is the surpassing greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his mighty strength, which he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and "seated him at his right hand" in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
And "he put all things under his feet" and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Notes

  1. §1.6ἧς — The relative pronoun, which grammatically should be in the accusative case as the direct object of the verb ἐχαρίτωσεν, has been attracted into the genitive case to match its antecedent τῆς χάριτος.
  2. §1.18πεφωτισμένους — Although logically referring to the dative pronoun ὑμῖν (to you) in verse 1.17, this participle grammatically agrees in gender, number, and case with the accusative noun τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς (the eyes), functioning as a predicate participle of result ("having the eyes of your heart enlightened").
  3. §1.23πληρουμένου — The present participle of the verb πληρόω can be interpreted as either middle ("who fills for himself") or passive ("who is filled"). Given the context of Christ actively filling all things, this translation adopts the active/middle sense ("of him who fills").
