Herodotus · Histories §9.88.1

Attaginus' Escape and Execution of the Thebans

Passage 1543 of 1577 · Greek

Summary

Attaginus escapes, but Pausanias acquits his children of any guilt. Meanwhile, the other surrendered Thebans hope to buy their way out, but Pausanias, anticipating this, dismisses the allied army and executes them in Corinth.

When they had agreed on these terms, Attaginus escaped from the city, but when his children were brought before him, Pausanias acquitted them of the charge, saying that children were in no way accomplices in the medism.
As for the other men whom the Thebans surrendered, they thought they would obtain a hearing and indeed trusted that they could push aside the charge with money; but he, when he received them, suspecting this very thing, dismissed the entire army of the allies and, leading those men to Corinth, put them to death.
This is what happened at Plataea and Thebes.

Notes

  1. 9.88.1οἳ μὲν ... ὁ δὲ — The subject switches between these contrastive particles: the former (οἳ μὲν) refers to the other men surrendered by the Thebans (plural), while the latter (ὁ δὲ) refers to Pausanias (singular).
  2. 9.88.1αὐτὰ ταῦτα ὑπονοέων — The demonstrative pronoun αὐτὰ ταῦτα refers to the preceding clause (the men's belief that they could push aside the charge with money). It serves as the direct object of the present participle ὑπονοέων, indicating that Pausanias suspected and guarded against their attempt at bribery.
