§9.75.1ἔστι δὲ καὶ ἕτερον Σωφάνεϊ λαμπρὸν ἔργον ἐξεργασμένον, ὅτι περικατημένων Ἀθηναίων Αἴγιναν Εὐρυβάτην τὸν Ἀργεῖον ἄνδρα πεντάεθλον ἐκ προκλήσιος ἐφόνευσε.
There is also another glorious deed achieved by Sophanes, namely that when the Athenians were besieging Aegina, he slew Eurybates the Argive, a man who was a pentathlete, in single combat upon a challenge.
αὐτὸν δὲ Σωφάνεα χρόνῳ ὕστερον τούτων κατέλαβε ἄνδρα γενόμενον ἀγαθόν, Ἀθηναίων στρατηγέοντα ἅμα Λεάγρῳ τῷ Γλαύκωνος, ἀποθανεῖν ὑπὸ Ἠδωνῶν ἐν Δάτῳ περὶ τῶν μετάλλων τῶν χρυσέων μαχόμενον.
But as for Sophanes himself, some time after these events, it befell him, after having proved himself a brave man, while commanding the Athenians as general along with Leagros the son of Glaukon, to meet his death at the hands of the Edonians in Datos, fighting for the gold mines.
