§9.66.1αὕτη μέν νυν ἡ μάχη ἐπὶ τοσοῦτο ἐγένετο.
Thus far, then, did this battle go.
Ἀρτάβαζος δὲ ὁ Φαρνάκεος αὐτίκα τε οὐκ ἠρέσκετο κατʼ ἀρχὰς λειπομένου Μαρδονίου ἀπὸ βασιλέος, καὶ τότε πολλὰ ἀπαγορεύων οὐδὲν ἤνυε, συμβάλλειν οὐκ ἐῶν·
But Artabazus the son of Pharnaces had from the very beginning been displeased that Mardonius had been left behind by the king, and at that time, though he strongly forbade them to join battle, advising against it, he accomplished nothing.
ἐποίησέ τε αὐτὸς τοιάδε ὡς οὐκ ἀρεσκόμενος τοῖσι πρήγμασι τοῖσι ἐκ Μαρδονίου ποιευμένοισι.
He himself, therefore, acted as follows, since he was displeased with the measures taken by Mardonius.
§9.66.2τῶν ἐστρατήγεε ὁ Ἀρτάβαζος (εἶχε δὲ δύναμιν οὐκ ὀλίγην ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐς τέσσερας μυριάδας ἀνθρώπων περὶ ἑωυτόν), τούτους, ὅκως ἡ συμβολὴ ἐγίνετο, εὖ ἐξεπιστάμενος τὰ ἔμελλε ἀποβήσεσθαι ἀπὸ τῆς μάχης, ἦγε κατηρτημένως, παραγγείλας κατὰ τὠυτὸ ἰέναι πάντας τῇ ἂν αὐτὸς ἐξηγέηται, ὅκως ἂν αὐτὸν ὁρῶσι σπουδῆς ἔχοντα.
As for the men whom Artabazus commanded (and he had no small force with him, but as many as forty thousand men), when the engagement began, knowing well what the outcome of the battle was bound to be, he led them in an orderly fashion, having ordered them all to go together in whatever direction he himself should lead them, at whatever speed they saw him hasten.
§9.66.3ταῦτα παραγγείλας ὡς ἐς μάχην ἦγε δῆθεν τὸν στρατόν.
Having given these orders, he led his army as if for battle.
προτερέων δὲ τῆς ὁδοῦ ὥρα καὶ δὴ φεύγοντας τοὺς Πέρσας· οὕτω δὴ οὐκέτι τὸν αὐτὸν κόσμον κατηγέετο, ἀλλὰ τὴν ταχίστην ἐτρόχαζε φεύγων οὔτε ἐς τὸ ξύλινον οὔτε ἐς τὸ Θηβαίων τεῖχος ἀλλʼ ἐς Φωκέας, ἐθέλων ὡς τάχιστα ἐπὶ τὸν Ἑλλήσποντον ἀπικέσθαι.
But as he advanced on his way, he saw the Persians already fleeing; whereupon he no longer led them with the same order, but fled at top speed, running neither to the wooden wall nor to the wall of the Thebans, but toward Phocis, wishing to reach the Hellespont as quickly as possible.
