§9.106.1ἐπείτε δὲ κατεργάσαντο οἱ Ἕλληνες τοὺς πολλοὺς τοὺς μὲν μαχομένους τοὺς δὲ καὶ φεύγοντας τῶν βαρβάρων, τὰς νέας ἐνέπρησαν καὶ τὸ τεῖχος ἅπαν, τὴν ληίην προεξαγαγόντες ἐς τὸν αἰγιαλόν, καὶ θησαυρούς τινας χρημάτων εὗρον·
When the Greeks had destroyed the majority of the barbarians, some of them fighting and others also fleeing, they carried the booty out onto the beach and burned all the ships and the wall, and they also found some treasures of money.
ἐμπρήσαντες δὲ τὸ τεῖχος καὶ τὰς νέας ἀπέπλεον.
Having burned the wall and the ships, they sailed away.
§9.106.2ἀπικόμενοι δὲ ἐς Σάμον οἱ Ἕλληνες ἐβουλεύοντο περὶ ἀναστάσιος τῆς Ἰωνίης, καὶ ὅκῃ χρεὸν εἴη τῆς Ἑλλάδος κατοικίσαι τῆς αὐτοὶ ἐγκρατέες ἦσαν, τὴν δὲ Ἰωνίην ἀπεῖναι τοῖσι βαρβάροισι·
Arriving at Samos, the Greeks held a council concerning the evacuation of Ionia, and in what part of Greece, which they themselves controlled, they ought to settle the Ionians, and whether they should abandon Ionia to the barbarians.
ἀδύνατον γὰρ ἐφαίνετό σφι εἶναι ἑωυτούς τε Ἰώνων προκατῆσθαι φρουρέοντας τὸν πάντα χρόνον, καὶ ἑωυτῶν μὴ προκατημένων Ἴωνας οὐδεμίαν ἐλπίδα εἶχον χαίροντας πρὸς τῶν Περσέων ἀπαλλάξειν.
For it seemed impossible to them that they themselves should sit on guard in front of the Ionians, keeping watch for all time, and if they themselves were not sitting in front of them, they had no hope that the Ionians would get off scot-free from the Persians.
§9.106.3πρὸς ταῦτα Πελοποννησίων μὲν τοῖσι ἐν τέλεϊ ἐοῦσι ἐδόκεε τῶν μηδισάντων ἐθνέων τῶν Ἑλληνικῶν τὰ ἐμπολαῖα ἐξαναστήσαντας δοῦναι τὴν χώρην Ἴωσι ἐνοικῆσαι, Ἀθηναίοισι δὲ οὐκ ἐδόκεε ἀρχὴν Ἰωνίην γενέσθαι ἀνάστατον οὐδὲ Πελοποννησίοισι περὶ τῶν σφετερέων ἀποικιέων βουλεύειν·
To this, those of the Peloponnesians who were in authority thought it best to evict the inhabitants of the trading-places of those Greek nations that had medized, and to give that land to the Ionians to dwell in. But to the Athenians it did not seem good that Ionia should be made desolate at all, nor that the Peloponnesians should deliberate about their own colonies.
ἀντιτεινόντων δὲ τούτων προθύμως, εἶξαν οἱ Πελοποννήσιοι.
Since the Athenians opposed this zealously, the Peloponnesians gave way.
§9.106.4καὶ οὕτω δὴ Σαμίους τε καὶ Χίους καὶ Λεσβίους καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους νησιώτας, οἳ ἔτυχον συστρατευόμενοι τοῖσι Ἕλλησι, ἐς τὸ συμμαχικὸν ἐποιήσαντο, πίστι τε καταλαβόντες καὶ ὁρκίοισι ἐμμενέειν τε καὶ μὴ ἀποστήσεσθαι.
And thus indeed they admitted into the alliance the Samians, Chians, Lesbians, and the other islanders who happened to be serving with the Greeks, binding them by pledge and oaths to abide by it and not to revolt.
τούτους δὲ καταλαβόντες ὁρκίοισι ἔπλεον τὰς γεφύρας λύσοντες· ἔτι γὰρ ἐδόκεον ἐντεταμένας εὑρήσειν.
Having bound them by oaths, they sailed to destroy the bridges; for they still expected to find them stretched across.
οὗτοι μὲν δὴ ἐπʼ Ἑλλησπόντου ἔπλεον.
These, then, sailed towards the Hellespont.
