Herodotus · Histories §8.43.1

Peloponnesian Contingents and Ships at Salamis

Passage 1345 of 1577 · Greek

Summary

The Peloponnesian cities that joined the campaign at Salamis and the number of ships they provided are listed, noting that except for the Hermionians, they belong to the Dorian and Macednian nation.

The following were those who served: from the Peloponnese, the Lacedaemonians providing sixteen ships, and the Corinthians providing the same complement as at Artemisium; and the Sicyonians provided fifteen ships, the Epidaurians ten, the Troezenians five, and the Hermionians three. These, except for the Hermionians, were a Dorian and Macednian nation, having set out last from Erineus, Pindus, and Dryopis.
οἱ δὲ Ἑρμιονέες εἰσὶ Δρύοπες, ὑπὸ Ἡρακλέος τε καὶ Μηλιέων ἐκ τῆς νῦν Δωρίδος καλεομένης χώρης ἐξαναστάντες.
The Hermionians, however, are Dryopes, having been driven out from the region now called Doris by Heracles and the Malians.

Notes

  1. 8.43.1τὸ αὐτὸ πλήρωμα — While πλήρωμα generally means 'crew' or 'full complement', here it denotes 'the number of ships' or 'naval force'. According to 8.1.1, the Corinthians had provided 40 ships at Artemisium, so the phrase indicates the same number here.
  2. 8.43.1ὕστατα ὁρμηθέντες — The superlative adverb ὕστατα ('last' or 'most recently') modifies the participle ὁρμηθέντες ('having set out' or 'migrated', from ὁρμάω). It indicates that they were the most recent group to have migrated from the mentioned regions.
