Ξέρξης δὲ ἐκ τῆς Ἀκάνθου, ἐντειλάμενος τοῖσι στρατηγοῖσι τοῦ ναυτικοῦ στρατοῦ ὑπομένειν ἐν Θέρμῃ, ἀπῆκε ἀπʼ ἑωυτοῦ πορεύεσθαι τὰς νέας, Θέρμῃ δὲ τῇ ἐν τῷ Θερμαίῳ κόλπῳ οἰκημένῃ, ἀπʼ ἧς καὶ ὁ κόλπος οὗτος τὴν ἐπωνυμίην ἔχει· ταύτῃ γὰρ ἐπυνθάνετο συντομώτατον εἶναι.
And Xerxes from Acanthus, having ordered the commanders of the fleet to wait for him at Therma, dismissed the ships from his presence to proceed to Therma, which is situated on the Thermaic Gulf, from which also this gulf takes its name; for he heard that by this way was the shortest route.

For as far as Acanthus, the army had made its march from Doriscus marshalled in the following manner: Xerxes, having divided his whole land force into three divisions, appointed one of them to go along the sea, keeping company with the fleet; of this division Mardonius and Masistes were the commanders; another third part of the army, being marshalled, went through the inland country, and of this Tritantaechmes and Gergis were the commanders; while the third of the divisions, with which Xerxes himself marched, went in the middle of them, and had for its commanders Smerdomenes and Megabyzus.
