§7.30.1οἱ δὲ Θηβαῖοι αἰσθόμενοι ἐβοήθουν, καὶ καταλαβόντες προκεχωρηκότας ἤδη τοὺς Θρᾷκας οὐ πολὺ τήν τε λείαν ἀφείλοντο καὶ αὐτοὺς φοβήσαντες καταδιώκουσιν ἐπὶ τὸν Εὔριπον καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν, οὗ αὐτοῖς τὰ πλοῖα ἃ ἤγαγεν ὥρμει.
The Thebans, having perceived this, marched to the rescue, and having overtaken the Thracians who had already advanced not very far, they both took away their booty and, having put them to flight, pursued them to the Euripus and the sea, where the ships that had brought them were riding at anchor.
§7.30.2καὶ ἀποκτείνουσιν αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ ἐσβάσει τοὺς πλείστους οὔτε ἐπισταμένους νεῖν τῶν τε ἐν τοῖς πλοίοις, ὡς ἑώρων τὰ ἐν τῇ γῇ, ὁρμισάντων ἔξω τοξεύματος τὰ πλοῖα, ἐπεὶ ἔν γε τῇ ἄλλῃ ἀναχωρήσει οὐκ ἀτόπως οἱ Θρᾷκες πρὸς τὸ τῶν Θηβαίων ἱππικόν, ὅπερ πρῶτον προσέκειτο, προεκθέοντές τε καὶ ξυστρεφόμενοι ἐν ἐπιχωρίῳ τάξει τὴν φυλακὴν ἐποιοῦντο, καὶ ὀλίγοι αὐτῶν ἐν τούτῳ διεφθάρησαν.
And they killed most of them during the embarkation; for they did not know how to swim, and those on board the ships, when they saw what was happening on land, had anchored the vessels out of bowshot. Indeed, during the rest of the retreat, the Thracians, against the Theban cavalry which had first attacked them, made a not unskilful defense, charging forward and closing their ranks in their native fashion, and few of them were destroyed during this part.
μέρος δέ τι καὶ ἐν τῇ πόλει αὐτῇ δι’ ἁρπαγὴν ἐγκαταληφθὲν ἀπώλετο.
However, a certain part of them, left behind in the city itself for the sake of plunder, perished.
οἱ δὲ ξύμπαντες τῶν Θρᾳκῶν πεντήκοντα καὶ διακόσιοι ἀπὸ τριακοσίων καὶ χιλίων ἀπέθανον.
In all, two hundred and fifty of the thirteen hundred Thracians were killed.
§7.30.3διέφθειραν δὲ καὶ τῶν Θηβαίων καὶ τῶν ἄλλων οἳ ξυνεβοήθησαν ἐς εἴκοσι μάλιστα ἱππέας τε καὶ ὁπλίτας ὁμοῦ καὶ Θηβαίων τῶν βοιωταρχῶν Σκιρφώνδαν· τῶν δὲ Μυκαλησσίων μέρος τι ἀπανηλώθη.
But they also killed, of the Thebans and the others who had joined in the rescue, about twenty in all, both cavalry and hoplites together, and among the Thebans, Scirphondas, one of the Boeotarchs; and of the Mycalessians, a certain part was destroyed.
τὰ μὲν κατὰ τὴν Μυκαλησσὸν πάθει χρησαμένην οὐδενὸς ὡς ἐπὶ μεγέθει τῶν κατὰ τὸν πόλεμον ἧσσον ὀλοφύρασθαι ἀξίῳ τοιαῦτα ξυνέβη.
Such were the events that befell Mycalessus, which suffered a disaster no less worthy of lamentation, considering its size, than any other in the war.
