ἀλλ’ ἐπιστάμεθα τὰ τῶν πολέμων ἔστιν ὅτε κοινοτέρας τὰς τύχας λαμβάνοντα ἢ κατὰ τὸ διαφέρον ἑκατέρων πλῆθος· καὶ ἡμῖν τὸ μὲν εἶξαι εὐθὺς ἀνέλπιστον, μετὰ δὲ τοῦ δρωμένου ἔτι καὶ στῆναι ἐλπὶς ὀρθῶς.
MEL. But we know that the fortunes of war sometimes take a more impartial course than corresponds to the difference in numbers between both sides; and for us, to yield immediately is to have no hope at all, but with action, there is still hope to stand firm, and that with reason.
