§1.65.1Ἀριστεὺς δὲ ἀποτειχισθείσης αὐτῆς καὶ ἐλπίδα οὐδεμίαν ἔχων σωτηρίας, ἢν μή τι ἀπὸ Πελοποννήσου ἢ ἄλλο παρὰ λόγον γίγνηται, ξυνεβούλευε μὲν πλὴν πεντακοσίων ἄνεμον τηρήσασι τοῖς ἄλλοις ἐκπλεῦσαι, ὅπως ἐπὶ πλέον ὁ σῖτος ἀντίσχῃ, καὶ αὐτὸς ἤθελε τῶν μενόντων εἶναι·
Aristeus, when Potidaea was walled off and he had no hope of safety unless something should come from the Peloponnese or some other unexpected event occur, advised that all the rest, except five hundred, should watch for a wind and sail away, so that the provisions might last longer; and he himself was willing to be one of those who remained.
ὡς δ’ οὐκ ἔπειθε, βουλόμενος τὰ ἐπὶ τούτοις παρασκευάζειν καὶ ὅπως τὰ ἔξωθεν ἕξει ὡς ἄριστα, ἔκπλουν ποιεῖται λαθὼν τὴν φυλακὴν τῶν Ἀθηναίων.
But when he could not persuade them, wishing to arrange the next steps and to ensure that matters outside should be as favorable as possible, he made his escape by sea, eluding the guard of the Athenians.
§1.65.2καὶ παραμένων ἐν Χαλκιδεῦσι τά τε ἄλλα ξυνεπολέμει καὶ Σερμυλιῶν λοχήσας πρὸς τῇ πόλει πολλοὺς διέφθειρεν, ἔς τε τὴν Πελοπόννησον ἔπρασσεν ὅπῃ ὠφελία τις γενήσεται.
And remaining among the Chalcidians, he helped them in their other military operations, and having laid an ambush near the city of the Sermylians, he destroyed many of them, and also negotiated with the Peloponnese to see how some assistance might be obtained.
μετὰ δὲ τῆς Ποτειδαίας τὴν ἀποτείχισιν Φορμίων μὲν ἔχων τοὺς ἑξακοσίους καὶ χιλίους τὴν Χαλκιδικὴν καὶ Βοττικὴν ἐδῄου καὶ ἔστιν ἃ καὶ πολίσματα εἷλεν.
After the walling off of Potidaea, Phormio, with his sixteen hundred men, ravaged Chalcidice and Bottica, and captured some of their small towns.
