Ἀρχαίη Βαβυλὼν Τυρίου Βήλοιο πόλισμα, ὕστατα δʼ Ἀρραβίης, γείτων χθονὸς Αἰγύπτοιο.
Ancient Babylon, the city of Tyrian Belus, and the furthest parts of Arabia, neighbor to the land of Egypt.
§3Ταῦρος.
Taurus.
Θηρὶ δʼ ὑπέστρωται κλίμα Μηδικὸν Ἀρραβίη τε, ἠδὲ καὶ εὐβώλοιο καλὸν πέδον Αἰγύπτοιο.
And under the Beast is spread the Median region and Arabia, and also the beautiful plain of fertile Egypt.
§4Δίδυμοι.
Gemini.
Ἔστι δὲ φωνῆεν κλίμα Καππαδοκῶν ὑπὸ τῷδε, ἠδέ τε Περαιβῶν καὶ Φοινίκων θεοτεύκτων.
And under this is the vocal region of the Cappadocians, and that of the Perraebians and of the god-built Phoenicians.
§5Καρκίνος.
Cancer.
Τῷ δʼ ὕπο Θρηίκων τε καὶ Αἰθιόπων κλίμα κεῖται.
And under it lies the region of the Thracians and of the Ethiopians.
§6Λέων.
Leo.
Τῷ δʼ ὑπόκει θ᾿ Ἑλλὰς Φρυγίη δʼἅμα καὶ στόμα Πόντου.
And under it lie Hellas and Phrygia together, and the mouth of the Pontus.
§7Παρθένος.
Virgo.
δʼ ὕπο πᾶσα Ῥόδος καὶ Κυκλάδες ἄμμιγα νῆσοι, καὶ δρυὸς ὠγυγίης ἄκῤ Ἀρκάδες ἄνδρες ἔδοντες, καὶ βαθυδινήταο μέγας ῥόος Ὠκεανοῖο, καὶ κλίμʼ Ἀχαιικὸν ἔσκε Λακωνίδος ἠδὲ Λακώνων.
And under [this] is all of Rhodes and the Cyclades islands mingled together, and the Arcadian men who eat the fruits of the ancient oak, and the great stream of the deep-swirling Ocean, and there was the Achaean region of Laconica and of the Lacones.
§8Ζυγός.
Libra.
κλίμα Κυρήνης ὑπὸ χηλαῖς, Ἰταλίη χώρη τε πέλει πλάστιγγας ὑπʼ αὐτάς.
And under [its] claws is the region of Cyrene, and the Italian land is directly under its scales.
§9Σκορπίος.
Scorpius.
ὑπὸ δʼ αὐτῷ ἔπλετο πᾶσα Καρχηδὼν Τυρίης Διδοῦς ὕπο δωμηθεῖσα, Ἄμμωνος Λιβύη, σύν τʼ οἴδματι Σικελίη χθών.
And under it is all of Carthage, built by Tyrian Dido, and the Libya of Ammon, together with the swelling sea of the Sicilian land.
§10Τοξότης.
Sagittarius.
Ἔστρωται δʼ ὑπὸ τῷδε βαθυπλούτων κλίμα Γάλεων, καὶ Κρήτη Κρονίδαο Διὸς τροφός, ᾗχί τε μύστης ἁρπαγίμης ὑμέναιος ἔφυ κρατερῆς Εὐρώπῃς· τῷ δʼ ὕπο Κιμμερίη τέταται χθὼν ἡ πανέρημος.
And under this is spread the region of the deeply wealthy Gauls, and Crete, the nurse of Zeus, son of Cronus, where the secret marriage of the ravished Europa took place; and under it is stretched the Cimmerian land which is entirely desolate.

Aries.
Ἓ δʼ ὁρίων ἐπέχει μοίρας Φαέθων ἐνὶ τούτῳ τὰς πρώτας, μετέπειτα δʼ ἴσας λάχεν ἡ Κυθέρεια, ὀκτὼ δὲ Στίλβων τρίτατος, Πυρόεις δέ τε πέντε· τὰς δʼ ὑπολειπομένας ἔλαχεν Φαίνων ἴσα Θούρῳ.
And in this Phaethon holds the first six degrees of the terms, and next Cythereia got equal degrees, and Stilbon third got eight, and Pyroeis five; and Phaenon got the remaining degrees, equal to Pyroeis.
§12Ταῦρος.
Taurus.
Ὀκτὼ δʼ ἔλλαχε τὰς πρώτας μοίρας Κυθέρεια ἐν τούτῳ· Στίλβων δὲ μετʼ αὐτὴν ἔλλαχε μοίρας δὶς τρεῖς, καὶ Φαέθων ἔλαχʼ ὀπτώ, πέντε δὲ Φαίνων· τὰς δʼ ὑπολειπομένας ἔλαχεν Πυρόεις μετὰ τούσδε.
And Cythereia got the first eight degrees in this; and Stilbon after her got twice three degrees, and Phaethon got eight, and Phaenon five; and Pyroeis got the remaining degrees after these.
§13Δίδυμοι.
Gemini.
Στίλβων ἐν τούτῳ προτέρας ἓξ ἔλλαχε μοίρας, τὰς δʼ ἴσας Φαέθων, τριτάτη Παφίη λάχε πέντε, ἑπτὰ δὲ θοῦρος Ἄρης, ἓξ δʼ αὖ Φαίνων μετέπειτα.
In this, Stilbon got the first six degrees, and Phaethon equal degrees, third the Paphian got five, and furious Ares seven, and then Phaenon again six.
§14Καρκίνος.
Cancer.
Ἑπτὰ δὲ τὰς προτέρας ὁρίων μοίρας λάχε Θοῦρος ἐν τούτῳ, μετέπειτα καὶ ἓξ λάχεν ἡ Κυθέρεια, τὰς δʼ ἴσας Ἑρμῆς, φαέθων Ζεὺς ἑπτὰ μετʼ αὐτόν, δὶς δὲ δύω πυμάτας ἔλαχε Κρόνος ἀγκυλομήτης.
And in this, Pyroeis got the first seven degrees of the terms, and next Cythereia got six, and Stilbon equal degrees, and shining Zeus seven after him, and crooked-counseling Cronus got the last twice two degrees.

Leo.
Ἓξ δʼ ἐπέχει Φαέθων προτέρας μοίρας ἐνὶ τούτῳ, πέντε δʼ ἔχει Παφίη· Φαίνων δʼ ἔχει ἑπτὰ μετ᾿ αὐτήν, ἓξ δʼ ἔχει Ἑρμείας, πυμάτας δʼ ἓξ ἔλλαχεν Ἄρης.
And Phaethon holds the first six degrees in this, and the Paphian has five; and Phaenon has seven after her, and Hermeias has six, and Ares got the last six.

Φαίνων.
And in this, Stilbon again got the first seven degrees, and Cypris has ten degrees, and Phaethon after her four, and Ares seven; and Phaenon got the last two.

Libra.
Ἕξ δʼ ὁρίων μοίρας ἔλαχεν Φαίνων ἐνὶ τούτῳ, ὀκτὼ δὲ στίλβων ἀστὴρ μέγας Ἑρμάωνος, ἑπτὰ δὲ Ζεὺς φαέθων, Παφίη δʼ ἴσας λάχεν ἑπτά· τὰς δʼ ὑπολειπομένας δισσὰς λάχεν Ἄρεος ἀστήρ.
And in this, Phaenon got six degrees of the terms, and Stilbon, the great star of Hermaon, got eight, and shining Zeus seven, and the Paphian got equal degrees; and the star of Ares got the remaining two.

Scorpius.
Ἑπτὰ δέ τοι μοίρας ὁρίων Πυρόεις λάχε τούτου, τέσσαρας αὖ Παφίη, ὀκτὼ Στίλβων, μετέπειτα πέντε Ζεὺς φαέθων, πυμάτας δʼ ἓξ ἔλλαχε Φαίνων.
And Pyroeis got seven degrees of the terms of this, and again the Paphian four, Stilbon eight, next shining Zeus five, and Phaenon got the last six.

Sagittarius.
Δώδεκα δὲ προτέρας Φαέθων μοίρας λάχε τούτου, πέντε δέ τοι Παφίη· τρίτατος στίλβων μετὰ τούσδε τέσσαρας Ἑρμείας ἔλαχεν, Φαίνων δέ τε πέντε· τὰς δʼ ὑπολειπομένας Ἄρης λάχε δὶς δύο μοίρας.
And Phaethon got the first twelve degrees of this, and the Paphian five; and third after these Hermeias got four, and Phaenon five; and Ares got the remaining twice two degrees.

Capricorn.
Ἑπτὰ δὲ τὰς πρώτας ἔλαχε Στίλβων πάλι μοίρας, ἑπτὰ δέ τοι Φαέθων, δὶς τέσσαρας ἡ Κυθέρεια, Φαίνων δὶς δύʼ ἔχει, πυμάτας δʼ Ἄρης ἴσα τούτῳ.
And Stilbon again got the first seven degrees, and Phaethon seven, Cythereia twice four, Phaenon has twice two, and Ares has the last, equal to this.
§21Ὑδροχόος.
Aquarius.
Ἑπτὰ δὲ τὰς προτέρας Ἑρμῆς λάχεν· εἶτα μετʼ αὐτὸν ἓξ μοίρας Κύπρις· Φαέθων μετέπειτα λάχʼ ἑπτά, πέντε δὲ θοῦρος Ἄρης, πυμάτας δὲ Κρόνος λάχε πέντε.
And Hermes got the first seven degrees; then after him Cypris six degrees; next Phaethon got seven, and furious Ares five, and Cronus got the last five.
§22Ἰχθύες.
Pisces.
Δώδεκα δὲ προτέρας μοίρας λάχε Κύπρις ἁπάσας, δὶς δὲ δύω Φαέθων, Στίλβων τρεῖς, ἐννέα Θοῦρος· τὰς δʼ ὑπολειπομένας δισσὰς Φαίνων λάχε μοίρας.
And Cypris got the first twelve degrees all together, and Phaethon twice two, Stilbon three, Pyroeis nine; and Phaenon got the remaining two degrees.
§23Δωροθέου περὶ τριγώνων.
Dorotheus on Triplicities.
Κριὸς χαιτήεις τε Λέων τόξοιό τε Ῥυτὴρ ἤματος Ἠελίοιο, Διὸς δέ τε νυκτὸς ἔασιν ἀλλάγδην· αἰνὸς δὲ Κρόνος τριτάτην λάχεν αἶσαν Ταύρου·
Aries, and the maned Leo, and the Drawer of the Bow are of the Sun by day, and of Zeus by night, alternately; and dread Cronus got the third share.
Παρθενικῆς δὲ καὶ Αἰγόκερω κρατέουσιν ἤματος Ἀφρογενής, νυκτὸς δέ τε δῖα Σελήνη, καὶ τρίτατος μετὰ τοῖσι θεὸς πολέμοισιν ἀνάσσων· ἐν δέ νυ Παρθενικῇ Μαίης προσλάμβανε κοῦρον.
And over Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn rule by day the Foam-born, and by night the divine Moon, and third among them the god who rules over wars; and in Virgo, indeed, he took additionally the son of Maia.
ἐν Διδύμοις Ζυγῷ τε καὶ Ὑδροχόῳ κρυόεντι ἠμάτιος Φαίνων, ἀτὰρ ἔννυχος Ἀργειφόντης· τούτων δʼ ὑστατίην Κρονίδης μοιρήσατο τάξιν.
In Gemini, Libra, and cold Aquarius, Phaenon is the ruler by day, but by night the Argus-slayer; and the son of Cronus received the last position of these.
Καρκίνον αὖτε λάχεν καὶ Σκορπίον ἠδέ τε λοίσθους Ἰχθύας ἠματίη Κύπρις. Πυρόεις δέ τε νυκτός, καὶ μετὰ τοὺς ἑλικῶπις ἔχει βασίλισσα Σελήνη.
On the other hand, Cancer and Scorpius and the last, Pisces, Cypris got by day, and Pyroeis by night, and after them the quick-glancing queen Moon holds.
§24Τοῦ αὐτοῦ ἐν οἷς χαίρουσι τόποις οἱ ἀστέρες.
Of the same author, in which places the stars rejoice.
Αἱρετοὶ ἐκ τούτων μᾶλλον Κρόνος εἰν Ὑδροχῆι, Ζεὺς δʼ ἐνὶ Τοξευτῇ, καὶ Σκορπίῳ ἥδεται Ἄρης· Κύπρις δʼ ἐν Ταύρῳ γάνυται νόον, ἐν δέ νυ Κούρῃ Ἑρμείας· εἷς δʼ ἔστι δόμος φωστῆρος ἑκάστου.
More preferable of these: Cronus rejoices in Aquarius, and Zeus in Sagittarius, and Ares in Scorpius; and Cypris gladdens her mind in Taurus, and Hermeias in the Virgin; and there is one house for each light-bringer.

The Sun is exalted in the nineteenth degree of Aries, and the Moon in the third of Taurus, and Cronus in the twenty-first of Libra; and the Aegis-bearer in the fifteenth of Cancer, and Ares in Capricorn in the fourth of sevens, and Cypris in Pisces around thrice nine, and Hermes in Virgo in the third of fives; and the depressions are diametrically opposite to the exaltations.
