Aleph.
Ἐγὼ ἀνήρ ὁ βλέπων πτωχείαν, ἐν ῥάβδῳ θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ ἐπʼ ἐμέ
I am the man that has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath upon me.
§3.2παρέλαβέν με καὶ ἀπήγαγεν εἰς σκότος καὶ οὐ φῶς.
He has led me and brought me into darkness, and not into light.
§3.3πλὴν ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐπέστρεψεν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν,
Surely against me he has turned his hand again and again all the day.
§3.4ἐπαλαίωσεν σάρκα μου καὶ δέρμα μου, ὀστέα μου
συνέτριψεν.
My flesh and my skin has he made old; he has broken my bones.
§3.5Βή.
Beth.
ʼΑνκοδόμησεν κατʼ ἐμοῦ, καὶ ἐκύκλωσεν κεφαλὴν μου καὶ
ἐμόχθησεν,
He has builded against me, and compassed my head, and travailed.
§3.6ἐυ σκοτινοῖς ἐκάθισέν με ὠς νεκροὺς αἰῶνος,
He has set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
§3.7ἀνῳκοδόμησεν κατʼ ἐμοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἐξελεύσομαι, ἐβάρυνεν
χαλκόν μου.
He has hedged me about, that I cannot get out; he has made my chain heavy.
§3.8Γμελ.
Gimel.
Καί γε κεκράξομαι καὶ βοήσω, ἀπέφραξεν προσευχήν μου.
Also when I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayer.
§3.9Δάλεθ.
Daleth.
’Ανῳκοδόμησεν ὁⁱούς μου, ἐνέφραξεν τρίβους μου,
ἐτάραξεν
He has enclosed my ways, he has blocked my paths, he has troubled them.
§3.10ἄρκος ἐνεδρεύουσα, αὐτός μοι λέων ἐν κρυφαίοις·
He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.
§3.11κατεδίωξεν ἀφεστηκότα καὶ κατέπαυσέν με, ἔθετό με
ἠφανισμένην.
He has turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces; he has made me desolate.
§3.12Ἥ
Ἐνέτεινεν τόξον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐστήλωσέν με ὡς σκοπὸν εἰς
βέλος,
He. He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
§3.13εἰσήγαγεν τοῖς νεφροῖς μου ἰοὺς φαρέτρας αὐτοῦ·
He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
§3.14ἐγενήθην γέλως παντὶ λαῷ μου, ψαλμὸς αὐτῶν ὅλην τὴν
ἡμέραν.
I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.
§3.15Οὐαύ.
Waw.
’Ἐχόρτασέν με πικρίας, ἐμέθυσέν με χολῆς,
He has filled me with bitterness, he has made me drunken with wormwood.
§3.16καὶ ἐξέβαλεν ψήφῳ ὀδόντας μου, ἐψώμισέν με σποδόν·
He has also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he has covered me with ashes.
§3.17καὶ ἀπώσατο ἐξ εἰρήνης ψυχὴν μου, ἐπελαθόμην ἀγαθά,
And he has removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity.
§3.18καὶ ἀπώλετο νῖκός μου καὶ ἡ ἐλπίς μου ἀπὸ Κυρίου.
And my strength and my hope is perished from the Lord.
§3.19Zάι.
Zayin.
ʼΚἘμνήσθην ἀπὸ πτωχείας μου καὶ ἐκ διωγμοῦ,
I remembered my affliction and my misery, my bitterness and wormwood.
§3.20πικρία καὶ χολὴ μου μνησθήσεται, καὶ καταδολεσχήσει
ἐπʼ ἐμὲ ἡ ψυχή μου·
My soul has them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.
§3.21ταύτην τάξω εἰς τὴν καρδίαν μου, διὰ τοῦτο ὑπομενῶ.
This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
§3.25Ἥθ.
Heth.
Ἀγαθὸς Κύριος τοῖς ὑπομένουσιν αὐτόν,
ψυχῇ ἡ ζητήσει αὐτὸν ἀγαθόν·
The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.
§3.26καὶ ὑπομενεῖ καὶ ἡσυχάσει εἰς τὸ σωτήριον Κυρίου.
It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.
§3.27Tήθ.
Teth.
Ἀγαθὸν ἀνδρὶ ὅταν ἄρῃ ζυγὸν ἐν νεότητι αὐτοῦ,
It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
§3.28καθήσεται κατὰ μόνας καὶ σιωπήσεται, ὅτι ἤρεν ἐφʼ ἑαυτῷ.
He sits alone and keeps silence, because he has borne it upon him.
§3.30Ἰώδ.
Yod.
Δώσει τῷ παίοντι αὐτὸν σιαγόνα, χορτασθήσεται ὀνειδισμῶν,
He gives his cheek to him that smites him: he is filled full with reproach.
§3.31ὅτι οὐκ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἀπώσεται Κύριος.
For the Lord will not cast off for ever.
§3.32Xάφ.
Kaph.
Ὅτι ὁ ταπεινώσας οἰκτειρήσει καὶ κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος τοῦ ἐλέους
αὐτοῦ·
But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.
§3.33οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη ἀπὸ καρδίας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐταπείνωσεν υἱοὺς
ἀνδρός.
For he does not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.
§3.34Λαβδ.
Lamed.
Γοῦ ταπεινῶσαι ὑπὸ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ πάντας δεσμίους γῆς, §3.35τοῦ ἐκκλῖναι κρίσιν ἀνδρὸς κατέναντι προσώπου Γψίστου, §3.36καταδικάσαι ἄνθρωπον ἐν τῷ κρίνεσθαι αὐτόν, Κύριος
οὐκ εἶπεν.
To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth, To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the Most High, To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approves not.
§3.37τίς οὕτως εἶπεν, καὶ ἐγενήθη; Κύριος οὐκ ἐνετείλατο·
Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?
§3.38ἐκ στόματος Ὑψίστου οὐκ ἐξελεύσεται τὰ κακὰ καὶ τὸ
ἀγαθόν.
Out of the mouth of the Most High proceedeth not evil and good?
§3.39Μήμ.
Mem.
Τί γογγύσῃ ἄνθρωπος ζῶν ἀνὴρ περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας αὐτοῦ;
Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
§3.40Nούν.
Nun.
Ἐξηρευνήθη ἡ ὁδὸς ἡμῶν καὶ ἠτάσθη, καὶ ἐπιστρέψωμεν ἕως
Κυρίου·
Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.
§3.41ἀναλάβωμεν καρδίας ἡμῶν ἐπὶ χειρῶν πρὸς Γψηλὸν ἐν
οὐρανῷ·
Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.
§3.42ἡμαρτήσαμεν, ἠσεβήσαμεν, καὶ οὐχ ἱλάσθης.
We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.
§3.43Σάμχ.
Samekh.
Ἐπεσκέπασας ἐν θυμῷ καὶ ἀπεδίωξας ἡμᾶς,
ἀπέκτεινας, οὐκ ἐφείσω.
Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.
§3.44ἐπεσκέπασας νεφέλην σεαυτῷ εἰνεκεν προσευχῆς,
Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.
§3.45καμμύσαι με καὶ ἀπαωσθῆναι.
To close our eyes and to cast us off.
§3.46Ἄιν.
Ayin.
Ἕθηκας ἡμᾶς ἐν μέσῳ τῶν λαῶν, ⁴⁶ διήνοιξαν ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς τὸ
στόμα αὐτῶν πάντες οἱ ἐχθροὶ ἡμῶν.
Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people. All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.
§3.47φόβος καὶ θυμὸς ἐγενήθη ἡμῖν, ἔπαρσις καὶ συντριβή·
Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.
§3.48ἀφέσεις ὑδάτων κατάξει ὁ ὀφθαλμός μου ἐπὶ τὸ σύντριμμα
τῆς θυγατρὸς τοῦ λαοῦ μου.
Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
§3.49Φή.
Pe.
Ὁ ὀφθαλμός μου κατεπόθη, καὶ οὐ σιγήσομαι τοῦ μὴ εἰνιι
ἕκνηψιν, §3.50ἔως οὗ διακύψῃ καὶ ἴδῃ Κύριος ἐξ οὐρανοῦ.
Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission, Till the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.
§3.51ὀφθαλμός μου ἐπιφυλλιεῖ ἐπὶ τὴν ψυχὴν μου παρὰ
πάσας θυγατέρας πόλεαως.
Mine eye affecteth my heart because of all the daughters of my city.
§3.52Τιαδή.
Tsade.
ηρεύοντες ἐθήρευσάν με ὡς στρουθίον πάντες οἱ ἐχθροί μου
δωρεάν,
Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause.
§3.53ἐθανάτωσαν ἐν λάκκῳ ζωήν μου καὶ ἐπέθηκαν λίθον
ἐπʼ ἐμοί.
They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.
§3.54ὑπερεχύθη ὕδωρ ἐπὶ κεφαλὴν μου· εἶπα Ἀπῶσμαι.
Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.
§3.55Κὼφ.

Ἐπεκαλεσάμην τὸ ὄνομά σου, Κύριε, ἐκ λάκκου κατωτάτου,
I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.
§3.56φωνήν μου ἤκουσας μὴ κρύψῃς τὰ ὥτά σου εἰς τὴν
δέησίν μου·
Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.
§3.57εἰς τὴν βοήθειάν μου ἤγγισας,
ἐν ῇ σε ἡμέρᾳ ἐπεκαλεσάμην εἶπάς μοι Μὴ φοβοῦ.
Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
§3.58'Ρήχς.

Ἐδίκασας, Κύριε, τὰς δίκας τῆς ψυχῆς μου, ἐλυτρώσω τὴν
ζωήν μου.
O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.
§3.59ἴδες, Κύριε, τὰς ταραχάς μου, ἔκρινας τὴν κρίσιν μου.
O Lord, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause.
§3.60τἶδες πᾶσαν τὴν ἐκδίκησιν αὐτῶν, εἰς πάντας διαλογισμοὺς
αὐτῶν ἐν ἐμοί.
Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me.
§3.61Xσέν.

Ἥκουσας τὸν ὀνειδισμὸν αὐτῶν, πάντας τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς αὐτῶν
κατʼ ἐμοῦ, §3.62χείλη ἐπανισταμένων μοι καὶ μελέτας αὐτῶν κατʼ ἐμοῦ ὅλην
τὴν ἡμέραν.
Thou hast heard their reproach, and all their imaginations against me; The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.
§3.63καθέδραν αὐτῶν καὶ ἀνάκτησιν αὐτῶν. ἐπίβλεψον ἐπ ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν,
Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; look upon their eyes.
§3.64Κποδώσεις αὐτοῖς ἀνταπόδομα, Κύριε, κατὰ τὰ ἔργα τῶν
χειρῶν αὐτῶν.
Render unto them a recompence, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.
§3.65Θαύ.
Taw.
Ἀποδώσεις αὐτοῖς ὑπερασπισμόν, καρδίας μόχθον.
Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.
§3.66σὺ αὐτοὺς καταδιώξεις ἐν ὀργῇ καὶ ἐξαναλώσεις αὐτοὺς ὑποκάτω
τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, Κύριε.
Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the Lord.
