Notes

  1. §3.38εἰς μὴ καθαρόν — The adjective `καθαρόν` is used substantively in the neuter singular, meaning "an unclear sky" or "cloudy place." Combined with the preposition `εἰς`, it indicates the state of the sky into which the sun is setting.
  2. §3.41ἐναντίους τῷ βορρᾷ νέμεσθαι — The accusative plural adjective `ἐναντίους` serves as a predicative adjunct to the implied subject of the infinitive `νέμεσθαι`. `τῷ βορρᾷ` is a dative governed by `ἐναντίους`, meaning either "facing the north wind" or "with backs to the north wind."
  3. §3.42γῆς ἔντερα — Literally translating to 'the entrails of the earth', this is a Greek idiomatic expression for earthworms. Their abundant appearance on the surface is considered a sign of deteriorating weather or the approach of winter.
