§7.91.1

The Cilicians provided one hundred ships. These, in turn, wore native helmets on their heads, and instead of shields they had light shields made of raw ox-hide, and wore woollen tunics; each man had two javelins and a sword made very like the Egyptian daggers. These in ancient times were called Hypachaeans, but they took their name after Cilix, the son of Agenor, a Phoenician. The Pamphylians provided thirty ships, equipped with Greek arms. These Pamphylians are descendants of those who were dispersed from Troy along with Amphilochus and Calchas.

Syntax notes3 items
  1. 7.91.1κράνεα ἐπιχώρια

There is no verb in the clause following the prepositional phrase περὶ μὲν τῇσι κεφαλῇσι. The verb εἶχον from the subsequent clause λαισήια δὲ εἶχον is either shared, or a verb meaning 'wore' is omitted.

  2. 7.91.1ἐπὶ δὲ Κίλικος

The preposition ἐπί with the genitive case expresses the origin or basis of a name, meaning 'named after' or 'derived from'.

  3. 7.91.1τῶν ἐκ Τροίης ἀποσκεδασθέντων

Partitive genitive. Combined with the verb εἰσί, it means 'are of those who' or 'are descendants of those who were dispersed...'
