Artabanus Agrees to Test the Dream in the Royal Bed

Artabanus argues that if the dream is divine, it should appear regardless of clothing or bed, and accepts the proposal to sleep in Xerxes' bed wearing his clothes to test whether the dream will appear to him.

§7.16C.1

But if indeed this is not such as I distinguish, but partakes of something divine, you have comprehended the whole matter in what you said; for let it indeed appear to me too, just as to you, giving its command. But it ought to appear to me no more when I have your clothing than when I have my own, nor any more when I am resting in your bed than when in my own, if indeed it wishes to appear at all.

§7.16C.2

For this thing, whatever indeed it is, which appears to you in your sleep, surely does not reach such a degree of foolishness as to think, when seeing me, that I am you, judging by your clothing. But if it makes no account of me and does not deign to appear to me, whether I have my own clothing or yours, and does not visit me, this indeed will have to be learned. For if indeed it visits repeatedly, I myself would also say that it is divine.

§7.16C.3

But if you have so decided that this must be, and it is not possible to avert it, but it is now necessary for me to fall asleep in your bed, come, when these things are performed by me, let it appear to me too. But until then, I will hold to my present opinion.

Syntax notes3 items
  1. 7.16C.1ἢ οὐ

The redundant negative οὐ placed after the comparative expression (οὐδὲν μᾶλλον... ἤ). In Greek, a superfluous negative often appears after comparatives of difference or denial to emphasize the contrast, but is not translated as a negative in modern languages.

Future active/middle of the verb δοκέω ("think, suppose"). Its subject is the preceding neuter participle τὸ ἐπιφαινόμενόν τοι ("the thing appearing to you"). It governs the accusative and infinitive construction ἐμὲ ... εἶναι ("that I am [you]"), meaning "it will think, seeing me, that I am you."

Genitive absolute construction. The agent of the passive participle ἐπιτελευμένων ("being performed/accomplished") is expressed by the prepositional phrase ἐξ ἐμεῦ ("by me"). It indicates the circumstance: "while these things are being performed by me."
