§7.112.1

And Xerxes, having passed by the aforementioned [region], next passed by the strongholds of the Pierians, of which the name of one is Phagres and of the other Pergamos. Along this route indeed, he made his way past the very strongholds, keeping on his right hand the Pangaeum mountain, which is large and high, and in which there are gold and silver mines, which the Pierians and Odomantians and especially the Satrae exploit.

Syntax notes3 items
  1. 7.112.1τὴν εἰρημένην

A combination of the feminine singular accusative article and perfect passive participle, where a feminine noun meaning 'land' or 'region' (γῆν or χώρην) mentioned in the preceding section (7.111) is omitted and understood.

  2. 7.112.1τῶν ἐνὶ Φάγρης ἐστὶ οὔνομα καὶ ἑτέρῳ Πέργαμος

The word τῶν is a relative pronoun in the genitive plural, referring back to τείχεα. The form ἐνὶ is an Ionic spelling (or manuscript variant) for ἑνί. The entire phrase is understood as a variation of the contrasting construction τῶν μὲν ἑνὶ ... τῷ δὲ ἑτέρῳ ... ('to one of which ... and to the other ...'), with ἑτέρῳ in the dative, and the names (Phagres, Pergamos) given in the nominative or expected dative.

  3. 7.112.1ἀπέργων

Present participle of the verb ἀπείργω ('to keep away', 'exclude'). Here it means 'keeping (the mountain) out of his way on his right hand', describing the geographical relation of the army's route to Mount Pangaeum.
