§1.168.1

Now, such was the case concerning Phocaea in Ionia. And the Teians also did very similarly to these. For when Harpagus took their wall by a mound, they all embarked on their ships and went sailing for Thrace, and there they founded the city of Abdera, which Timesius of Clazomenae had founded before them but did not enjoy, being driven out by the Thracians; however, he now receives honors as a hero from the Teians who are in Abdera.

Syntax notes3 items
  1. 1.168.1οὕτω ἔσχε

Meaning 'so it was' or 'it turned out thus.' The intransitive use of ἔχω with the adverb οὕτω means 'to be in a certain state,' here used impersonally to describe the outcome of the situation.

  2. 1.168.1οἴχοντο πλέοντες

The verb οἴχομαι ('to have gone') combined with a participle (πλέοντες) denotes that an action has already occurred and the subjects are gone. It means 'they sailed away.'

  3. 1.168.1οὐκ ἀπόνητο

The third-person singular aorist in the Ionic dialect of the verb ἀπονίναμαι (middle: 'to derive benefit from,' 'to enjoy'). It means 'he did not enjoy [the fruit of his labor],' referring to his inability to benefit from the city he founded due to his expulsion.
