§1.161.1

The Chians, then, surrendered Pactyes. Mazares after this marched against those who had joined in the siege of Tabalus; and on the one hand he enslaved the people of Priene, and on the other hand he overran the whole plain of the Maeander, making it booty for his army, and did the same to Magnesia. Immediately after this, he died of a disease.

Syntax notes2 items
  1. 1.161.1τοῦτο μὲν... τοῦτο δὲ...

The neuter singular accusative τοῦτο is used adverbially with μέν and δέ to form a correlative structure meaning "on the one hand... on the other hand..." or "partly... partly...".

  2. 1.161.1ληίην ποιεύμενος

The present middle participle ποιεύμενος (Ionic for ποιούμενος) expresses an attendant circumstance or purpose relative to the main verb ἐπέδραμε, meaning "making [the plain] booty for his army." The phrase τῷ στρατῷ is a dative of advantage.
