§3.35.1

Paches, on arriving at Mytilene, brought Pyrrha and Eresos into subjection; and having captured Salæthus, the Lacedaemonian, who was hiding in the city, he sent him off to Athens, and at the same time the Mytilenaean men whom he had deposited in Tenedos, and any other person who seemed to him to have been responsible for the revolt.

§3.35.2

He also sent back the greater part of his army, but remaining behind with the rest, he settled the affairs of Mytilene and the rest of Lesbos in such manner as seemed best to him.

Syntax notes3 items

Third-person singular aorist middle of τίθημι. The middle voice indicates that the subject (Paches) deposited or kept them "for his own purposes" (e.g., as hostages).

Dative of accompaniment, indicating the military force accompanied by the commander ("with the remaining troops"). In military contexts, the preposition σύν is frequently omitted.
